Some very talented editors fail routine editing tests. Their failure isn’t because of their lack of editing skill, but because they don’t know enough about how tests are constructed. Conversely, some people (former teachers come immediately to mind) do surprisingly well at editing tests because they know how to set tests and understand what to look for when taking a test. This webinar teaches the basics of the various ways tests are constructed. It then shows examples (adapted from real tests) of things to watch for when being tested and how to deal with them.

Greg Ioannou once failed an Ontario Ministry of Education copy editing test and had the brains to ask why he’d failed. He later noticed a former teacher easily pass a test because she knew how tests are constructed. He landed a contract with an educational publisher editing tests, and he had to focus on how they made tests effective. Recently, he was mentoring an editor and told her what to pay attention to as she wrote a test and he realized that it would probably make a useful webinar topic. Greg’s been an editor since 1977 and has served four terms as president of Editors Canada.
