Beyond proofreading and copy editing the text in comics, editing the art and design of the lettering is an integral responsibility of comic book editors. This is where stylistic editing comes into play as it considers factors such as:
- Why composition, clarity, consistency, and purpose are key to the art of lettering
- How important spatial considerations are within balloons & captions
- Where font selection, versatility, conditions, and parameters affect readability
- How size reflects volume in speech and sound effects
- Why distributing text across multiple balloons & captions is necessary to the art and storytelling
- How placement of lettering helps guide reading order and eye flow
By understanding the art of lettering and its place as the last stage of production, participants will develop an appreciation for how what comes before – in the writing, the art, and the colouring – all play a role in the success the lettering will play in the final product.
