A research assistant for the three-year project The Routledge Encyclopedia of Modernist Dance (2025) offers pointers for crafting alt-text for complex images. Photographs of dance from the mid-20th Century modernist period offer distinct challenges of description, meaning, and inference that descriptive alt-text can support. We will walk through these challenges using several example images published in the Encyclopedia and the final portion of the webinar will ‘open the floor’ for troubleshooting with attendees. This webinar will be particularly applicable for editors and writers preparing alt-text for accessibility software for the visually impaired.
