Have questions about copyright and permissions? Dania Sheldon has answers.

If the topics of copyright, permissions, and licensing make you uneasy, you’re not alone. Public domain, fair use, open licensing, copyleft, Creative Commons, most favoured nation clause… Is it the author’s lifetime plus 50 years or 70? If something’s on the Internet, is it fair game for reuse? Do lyrics count? What about photographs of artworks? Delving into copyright and permissions can make the heart race in anxiety — or in excitement! In this one-hour overview, you’ll learn how this can be an intriguing, fun, and rewarding area of endeavour, one that can make your work projects more interesting and diversify your skill set for current and prospective clients. Some of the topics we’ll cover include:

  • the ethical principles of copyright
  • starting early and anticipating delays
  • staying organized and keeping paper trails
  • assessing risk and protecting yourself
  • making the request
  • following up
  • getting stuck
  • negotiating agreements
