AI tools have already proven themselves useful, yet to many they present a moral morass of ethical issues, privacy concerns and copyright violations. This presentation will first look at some ethical considerations regarding the use of AI tools. The perspectives provided don’t presume to provide moral guidance but will offer nuanced understanding of a complex issue. Second, we will examine privacy concerns that we should be aware of. Several AI models will be contrasted regarding their privacy settings. Third, I will summarize the latest copyright jurisprudence to expand on the understanding of the Copyright Act required of many editors. We’ll look at cases in the courts in order to see where the legal landscape might be heading. Finally, I will provide practical approaches for deciding which AI use cases are acceptable to you, your employers and your writers. We’ll review a series of templates and boilerplate for quotes that establish expectations of acceptable AI use.
